George, first let me congradulate you on this fine
web site. I can't get over the wealth of information you have
posted. A sincere thank you for your efforts. I was hoping to find out how to disassemble to headlight housings (and backup light housings) on the Bachmann Shay and Climax to replace those sad yellow LEDs. Any help would be appreciated as I certainly do not want to damage them. |

George: Your fine articles on the Bachman Climax were vital in the battery and R/C conversions of my locomotive. I read through your Climax tips for days before actually purchasing the locomotive and by the time I brought it home, I felt I already knew its inner workings. My alterations required extensive rewiring, and your schematics and illustrations of circuit boards and components where exactly what I needed. I am a professed live steamer and the Climax is my first and only electric locomotive. You made the transition easy. Thanks again so much for your thorough research. |

I bought a Backman G-scale kit at auction and 3
Railway Express cars. The Backman train comes uncoupled on a regular
basics. The type is knuckle couplers and they won't couple up to
the REA cars. Is there a type of coupler that will solve this
problem? You sure have a nice lay out. Looks like a lot of time and expense went into it. Thanks. L.T.Fortune Lynchburg, Va |

Have you some ideas to repair two Bachmann large
scale Shays? Booth has broken gears and one ist falling from a trestle
after a deraillment and the steammotor and the inkline are damaged,
because the gauge was to wide! Since one year I'm asking periodicaly
for spare parts by Bachmann, but they don't have for me till now. Do
you know another producer of gears for the Shay like Hillside by the
pickups?
I've reading your European trip with a little giggeling. I'm living in Switzerland and many of them you was commenting I'm knowing too. Italien are very known as Helldrivers.... but you forgot the German with no speed limit on Highway. It's a kick to drive my offroader with 180 kmh on German Highway for some hours to visit "little creek" garden railway. In Switzerland a ry tunnel with a length of 50 km is under construction and the Gotthardt Highway tunnel is 19 km long. I absolutely don't like him. I prefere by every weather the climbing and winding passroute. If I live in Switzerland it's very problemfull to get spare parts from Bachmann. Here it's more simple to get spareparts from LGB. Maybe you'll help me to get what I need for booth Shay's. They was still operating on my "oak valley & silver lake" Colorado stile Garden layout, just to the desaster with the gears. sincerly Heinz |

Thank you for the site. I have acquired a lot of
my equipment second hand, and as such like the articles on older
generation equipment.
I have Aristo equipment in the main, and have enjoyed the "tinkeing" opportunities that old equipment gives. My wife insists that I don't have a garden railway, just an ongoing engineering excercise. Regards Ray Gilmore |

interested in putting a garden scale outside, but totally no experience
there. I have a great wood shop for making bridges etc. pointers
getting started would be appreciated.

Great site and info. An amature like myself can
learn much from your site. I do have a question, Can a 5401 be used and
left in line between a 5460 and a 5470? Too many numbers. We are
setting up a new system in an established garden and I splurged for the
5470. Then wondered if it failed, what to do. If I missed this my
humblest apologies, if it hasn't been asked I hope others will benefit.
Thanks!

I am an adult/child that wants to get into G
Scale!! Your site is amazing! I have a screened in pool area of 55' x
40 feet with 15' of it under a flat roof. By looking at your site, I
see that I can build along the inside house perimiter of the protected
area and stretch the layout into the open area for briges and running
of trains...,but, I have no mechanical skilss and no idea what to buy
to start.
LGB has a digital starter set. Would this be a good way to begin, and then add on assessories, bridges, buildings, and track and Bachmann stuff, or should I look for a used total package and build it into my space?. If you would be willing to dialogue with me, I would so appreciate it. Are there people that would make me proposed layouts if I drew the area for them? Help from someone like you is the only way that I can start up in this fascinating hobby. Appreciatively, Ron Beck reallibra25@hotmail.com |

Hi GEORGE. Your tech tips are really useful in
keeping motive power up and running. I have a question maybe with your
expertise you could answer. I'm converting my ART rs-3 to battery power
with the rs-3 sound sys installed. Any way to eliminate that sorry-ful
little rechargable batt in the sound unit and make it work off of the
larger nicads that I have installed? The only way that I can get it to
work is with a seperate batt for the sound system. Thanks for any help
you can give GENE

I am moving and intend to move my layout and
enlarge it dramatically 23 m X 13 m, it will be in a rain forest filled
ravine at a place called Buderim on the Sunshine Coast. This is just
about tropical and it will overlook the Coral Sea about 90 M up a 7 km
in from the coast. I only run LGB as I have trouble with just about all
others. I think it you have another correspondent from the same area, I
think was Andrew H who lives in Brisbane which is about an hours drive
south of here. My layout will be called Jurassic Ginger as it hasn't
changed geologically since those times and Buderim is the Ginger
capital of Australia. I would be pleased to here what anyone would
advise me to do or more importantly not to do. regards Ian

appreciate your assistance.

I bought a place on one and a half acres and my
drive-way has created a turn-around in the shape of a large tear drop
where it about twenty five feet across and about seventy feet long. At
one end closest to the street I am going to put in a ten foot high
water fall, a couple pools of water toward the other end. And I've
always wanted to have a garden railroad and this would be a really good
place to have one. I also love to do gardening and landscapeing which
would fit right in with the railroad.
I'm trying to find a railroad that is about a foot or a foot an a half high to put in my garden but I don't know where to look to find one that is larger that the usual small trains. If you know of any I would appreciate it if you could contact me where to look for one. Thank you very much. |

G'day (yes, we really do say that all the time
over here).
I am impressed with the page here George, and most certainly the articles. I have just picked up my second loco (B'mann, 4-6-0). The first was the cute little MDC critter.. I was going to go with r/c ,but with the cost of batteries and a reciever for each loco bought, I am faced with cleaning the rail heads when things get stuck. One good thing about track power is the train can run as long there's no blackouts.. Also the critter won't fit all the gear for r/c like batteries and radio etc.. but I'm hoping it'll fit a smoke generator..I drilled out the stack on it already. (I'm thinking of making it solar powered using car batteries in the future.) Anyhoo, great page.Given me some "go" for making my own page. Kind regards, Andrew H. |

Great, great site. I've been planning to start my
railroad in the backyard, and I've found your track info very helpful.
I've also read with a great deal of interest your reviews of
locomotives and tech tips. I'll be coming back to this site frequently
for info and inspiration. Thanks, greg

SIMPLY PUT, THIS WAS THE MOST ASTOUNDING MODEL
RAILROADING SET UP AND DISCUSSION I HAVE EXPERIENCED IN MY NEARLY 60
YEARS OF LIFE. YOUR COMMENTS AND FIX-ITS ARE POINTED, HYSTERICAL AND
QUITE EASY TO FOLLOW. YOUR LAYOUT AND DETAILED PHOTOS & DIAGRAMS OF
SAME ARE EXTRAORDINARY! I STUMBLED HERE IN MY SEARCH FOR WHAT'S GOING
ON IN A HOBBY I'VE BEEN AWAY FROM FOR ABOUT 45 YEARS. I'LL BE BACK TO
ENJOY THIS AGAIN...OFTEN.
THANKS A MILLION, SORRY FOR GUSHING SO. |
