Searching for Shay info

Peoria, AZ

Do you have any comments?

I bought a Shay up in the Northwest, when they first came out, (#81198 Ely Thomas, 36 ton, 2 truck)up in the Northwest, because I have always had a love of Shays. Retired and am finally getting into putting an outdoor layout in the yard and have begun R/C'ing and weathering the Shay, so I came across your site while looking for info. Great info! I thought you might be able to help me find an owners manual for my Shay. Thru 3 moves, it somehow got lost. I have written to Bachmann, but got no reply. Any ideas?

Thanks for a great site!
I am a true newbe and have not even purchased my first piece of rolling stock or track. I have big plans and hope to get started soon after the 1st of Jan. 05. My father had a large O gage setup years ago. Now it seems I have got the bug. I am planning some 268 feet of road bed initially most of which will be suspended or tussled, ranging in height from 36 inches to 8 feet. My initial engine will be the Astro Craft EMD, SD-45 in the Southern Pacific. I plan on using stainless track. The suspension road bed and tussle system will be fabricated by myself as I used to do a lot of ornamental and security iron. So I have the time (retired), skill and equipment to do the steel work.
Agin thanks for the site!

We are going to the UK in a few weeks. Art is a WWII Vet and was billeted near Liverpool in 1944 and went over to Normandy on 6/28/44 with the 86th Chemical Mortar Batallion and on to the Battle of the Bulge.

I was just looking over English facts when I accessed your items. It is awesome. I cannot wait to tell Art what other people think about the English food. I know he will say 'that hasn't changed'. We will survive.

Thank you for the info on this wonderful site. I will pass it around.

In your British travel report you said "The Underground could use some trackwork improvement as the cars lurch and sway quite a lot." Actually, the track-work is very good, it's just that the older parts of the the Underground, which were constructed in the late 19th century, actually have grades and curves like a roller-coaster! You can see this if you stand at the back-end of a car and look in the direction of travel! Don't do this if you suffer from motion-sickness.

Cheers
Freddie

Please Help Me! I am looking to build a ride-on live steam setup on my property for my son and I to enjoy. My father and grandfather both worked on the lines and are both gone now and I would like my son to experience the great history of our family and the railroads. I own a small fab and machine shop and so can build anything but I would like to start with a kit for the locomotive, passenger cars and track just to get my feet wet. If anyone can point me in the right direction it would be greatly apreciated! God Bless to all.

Yes - you used power take offs for the Thomas the Tank train.

I put metal LGB spoke wheels on the carriages and put power pick offs on each axle, put in lights and hooked all of the cars together on a common power bus using LGB connectors. It works fine. Real tie counting slow speeds. I am doing this to all of my other trains. Works good on normally oxidized track out doors also.

I'll certainly check your site more often for infrormation as I continue planning my layout! Greetings from Austria, Robert

So far, you have provided the most info regarding questions I have as I put in my own garden railroad in the backyard. I have most of my contours, infrastructure, etc. put in, but am at the point of laying out wiring. Mine will be small to begin with. For awhile, it will be there for visitor interest and yard landscaping improvement. I am not really planning on intricate operations, but am focusing on the scenery & structures. I have gotten a lot of good info from your website and appreciate the help. Thanks!
