Need info on The Original Bachmann Big Hauler

be a good price to ask for it.

Dear George,
I enjoyed reading about your trip round England by rail and I'm thinking of using some of the very well written paragraphs in my classroom. I must, however take up the cudgels on behalf of English food. Do you know that there is a revolution going on? English restaurant food, (especially in the major cities, but also off the beaten track, in the historic towns and rural areas), is gaining a worldwide reputation. Please encourage any potential visitor-friends stateside to seek out these places and "feed back" the information. British cooks like Floyd, Oliver et al are well-known worldwide. The British are ardent vegetarians - and we're not just talking lentils here. I know Southern California, having visited friends in Ojai several times. My experience of the amazing variety of Mexican and other ethnic food there is that the budget joints were poor or mediocre, but that if you go for the rather classier establishments the quality improved dramatically. May I suggest that if you are judging English/British cuisine on the basis of pub grub, budget hotels, eateries near train stations and the like you weren't sampling of the best. In the UK, as in the US, it pays to look beyond the bright (neon) lights. Best wishes, Tim Evans, Monkton Combe Senior School, Bath |

The Big Hauler info will come in handy for me. I
bought a "Gold Rush" set off ebay so the Yoknapatawpha&Bear Creek
ry would have a passenger train. I've also got one of Bachmann's
industrial moguls. Do you have any tips for them? I want to add a
turn-of-the-century 4-4-0 to take over passenger service and a similer
2-8-0 to help the mogul with freight. The Big Hauler will then be used
in work train service and pinch-hit for the American. I also have an
Aristo 0-4-0 that needs a tender something awfull. I wonder why they
didn't go ahead and make the little engines tank engines when they put
out the starter sets? I'll get a slopeback tender /w sound and make the
modification. The motive power dept. of the Y&BC is also courting a
2-6-2 and a HLW tank engine. My 6 year old has a couple of battery
operated train sets that were bought at the dollar store. I wish there
was a way to rig up a rechargable battery system that worked off of
track power for these sets. The engines and cars are tolerable and they
run on g-gauge track. One even has a remote! I'll check back often and
see what's the latest. Thanks for the info.

My son and I used your bridge page for
inspiration to build a toothpick bridge for an 8th grade science
project. We settled on a slightly modified version of the Howe Truss.
The only materials allowed were toothpicks and Elmers glue. The
structure could weigh no more than 85 grams and the grade would be
determined by the structures weight compared to the load it would
bear.
Huge success! Our stucture weighed 15 grams. When the test load reached 38 lbs the teacher said, "No more! We're not going to destroy this one. It's going in the display case." Thanks from both of us for your site. |
