I have a engineering requirement for a BIG train. I need to calculate tractive effort required to pull 465,200lbs up a 6% grade at 5mph consisting of four coaches(railcars), and up to 2.5% grade on a curve of 120degrees on a 40m radius. Also....factor for tractive effect on 200,000lb locomotive sitting on eight driving wheels, i.e. 200,000 / 8 = 25,000lbs on each wheel by a factor of about 25% = 6,200 lbs tractive effort per wheel. Anyone who can help or point me in the right direction please do!!!! Lynne |

Your technical pages are very interesting. One thing Bachmann have let us down on is that they never have supplied factory produced updates to improve older versions. This is a pity as not everone can afford to buy a BBT chassis even though these are very good. Tha lates anniversary 4-6-0 is undoubtedly the best yet but it looks like he same old can motor is still being used. Does anyone know ? |

Generally I (presently) use H'nLs' but decided to use the knuckles for mating the snowplow to the SD-45 for snow clearing operations on the RBRR. the plow tends to be left behind when backing off from a temporary plug of snow ...for another run at it. It is likely that "lump" you mention that is causing this prerelease. Now that the snow is hopefully gone for another year repairs and upgrades to the snowplow can be done w/o affecting 'operations'. Also, while the original documentation says the receiver will handle 10 Amps, in the Aristo book about the Train Engineer I read where it says that this older model is only rated for 3 Amps. Disagree on couplers, I like USA the best; small, stout, and you can push a consist without the coupler swiveling on its shank (like AC). Reading connector tips thought I'd mention this. As you know, MUing engines greatly helps operations; I use "sub-mini" connectors like small guitar plugs, and a 4" length of wire, jack mounted on each end of all road engines. Polarity issue solved by dpdt switch in line with "external inputs" so a flip of the switch(hidden under bottom of engine) feeds correct polarity to motor power. This small two conductor "jumper" in line between each engine allows 2, 3 4 or more lash ups-heats up those power packs- Still looking for the best way to clean those AC wheels-USA seems to stay cleaner ! | Do you have any comments? | My wife and I just inherited her family home. It had gone to rack and ruin in the ten years her brother had it. We have completely gutted the backyard, except for some brick pathways, a couple of tall, venerable maples and the 19,000 gallon inground pool. My train-enthusiast neighbor suggested a large scale train for a hobby. I went for it. I'm looking at a roughly 50'x75' space for a perimeter layout (three sides of the yard) with an oval/switchyard in the SW corner of the yard and a reversing loop in the NW corner of the yard. The yard is not flat (Fairfax County required natural drainage through all the properties in the development). So, I have a lot of terracing and trestle problems to solve. My wife and I are going to landscape with the usual flora and fauna used in Virginia, both annuals and perrenials. If anyone has any suggestions on where to start, please let me know. My first search is determining proper turn radii for a Bachman electric set (not sure of the scale yet) so that I can begin a CAD layout. I'm going to the train show at the Maryland fairgrounds in Timonium next weekend (1/26/02) to get some ideas. Any and all suggestions are welcome. |
